Rachel Eckroth "When It Falls" Tour

Death, uncertainty, love, change, hope — grand ideas abound on Rachel Eckroth ’s new album When It Falls. As do bold musical statements: Perhaps better known as a jazz keyboardist, Eckroth here evokes the aura of the late David Bowie, experimental rockers Can and perhaps a great, lost David Lynch soundtrack.

Gill Landry (of Old Crow Medicine Show)

Gill Landry is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Louisiana. With his beginnings as a busker on the streets of New Orleans, he released his first solo album The Ballad of Lawless Soirez in 2007 on the Nettwerk label, and since 2005 has been performing as a member of the band Old Crow Medicine Show. His new album Piety and Desire is a love song to New Orleans. Named after two streets that run parallel through the city’s 9th ward where Landry cut his teeth for years. With the album he paints a dark and beautiful landscape of characters and loves from “quarter rats” to barmaids, merchants to thieves. Backed by the Felice Brothers who co-produced the album with Landry and Jeremy “The Searcher” Backofen the album also features the talents of Jolie Holland, Brandi Carlile, Ketch Secor, Sam Parton and many others artists, creating an album that is timeless and at times other-worldly.

    Spirit Award

Seattle based three-piece Spirit Award are known for their unique mix of sprawling stereo guitars, stunningly moody soundscapes and a driving drum and bass foundation. While Spirit Award are aptly capable of generating catchy psych moments, there seems to be no calculable formula to their writing style. Comprised of Daniel Lyon, Chris Moore and Terence Ankeny, the trio’s mutual goal in creating a sound with grit and authenticity is clearly evident throughout their music.

    Four Fists (P.O.S X ASTRONAUTALIS)

Stef Alexander and Andy Bothwell, respectively known as P.O.S and Astronautalis, have been making guest appearances on each other's records for over ten years, and date their friendship back even further. That makes a collaborative project like Four Fists both inevitable and necessary at the same time: it's the team-up of two of Minneapolis' most stylistically fearless artists, both of whom simultaneously inhabit the worlds of hip-hop and indie-punk in a way that the Twin Cities music community has always welcomed.

    Y La Bamba

Luz Elena Mendoza's (Y La Bamba )story is one sung to her ancestors and humanity, exploring a faith that is greater than just religion, and a life of metamorphosis and awakening. Born in San Francisco as a first generation daughter of immigrant parents from Michoacan Mexico, she spent her childhood raised by the melodies and stories that were being told through traditional Mexican folk songs. From the intimate, contemplative verses in her native-language, to the revelations of the history in her roots, her story is delivered with poise. Mendozas poetic expression is raw, and ever evolving. These songs are a soundtrack built for coming to grips with, not just one’s own mortality, but the fragility of the world, presenting sounds that carry the realness of ancestral trauma and the search of identity.
